Jeffrey Allen began studying Buddhism in 1995 focusing primarily on Tibetan Buddhism and the teachings of H.H. Dalai Lama. From that point on, whenever His Holiness gave public teachings on Sutra or Tantra, Jeff attended and still does whenever possible.
In 1997 Jeff met Khensur Geshe Wangdak, Rinpoche, the Retired Abbott of Namgyal Monastery India, personal monastery of H.H. Dalai Lama. Rinpoche gave a series of lectures on “Lam Rim”at the Chenrezig Tibetan Buddhist Center in Middletown Connecticut. In 1998 Khensur Rinpoche requested to retire at the center in Middletown.
Jeff picked up Rinpoche in Ithaca at Namgyal Monastery’s North American seat where he was teaching. This began their very close connection that never broke even after Rinpoche left our world on March 6, 2022.
From 2000-2001 Jeff took the advice of Khensur Geshe Wangdak to study with his student, the late Geshe Lobsang Gonpo in India at Drepung Loseling Gowo Khangsten. Geshe la was considered an incredible scholar and practitioner. Geshe Gonpo taught Jeff the first collected topics of debate. Being introduced to logic and debating the small, medium, and great levels contained in the monastic text, sharpened Jeff’s ability to understand and explain the stages of the path. Geshe Gonpo came back with Jeff to the Chenrezig Center and stayed for 2 years. Jeff studied Lorig during this time with Geshela as well as the 70 topics of the “Abhisamayalamkara” and “The general meaning of perfection”.
While in Drepung, Jeff also received the oral transmission of the “5 Great Philisophical texts” from Denma Locho Rinpoche. These texts make up the philosophical framework for the Geshe curriculum.
Over the 25 years, Jeff received and translated thousands of teachings Rinpoche gave in Middletown and around the United States. These included instructions on texts such as “Heart Sutra”, “General Meaning of Perfection”, “Sutra of the 3 Heaps”, “Entrance to the Middle Way”, “Stages of Meditation”, ”8 Verses for training the mind”, “Wheel of Sharp Weapons”, “7 Point Mind Training”, “Lamp on the Path to Enlightenment”, “Abbreviated Stages on the Path to Enlightenment”, “3 Principle Paths”, “Foundation of All Good Qualities”, “Praise of Dependent Origination”, and a very special detailed teaching on “The Great Treatise on the Stages of the Path to Enlightenment” that lasted over a decade. Rinpoche also publicly gave some limited details on the 4 classes of Tantra.
The last 2 years of Khensur Geshe Wangdaks life, Jeff had the honor of taking care of him and they completed the Kalachakra retreat and fire puja together. They also began a White Tara retreat that unfortunately due to karma and impermanence couldn’t be completed in physical form. The final hours of Rinpoche's life, he asked Jeff to continue teaching and carrying on the Lam Rim lineage of teachings.
Thanks to technology, Jeff is able to continue studying with male and female scholars in India that were both Khensur Geshe Wangdaks and Geshe Gonpos root students. Jeff continues to teach around the U.S. whenever requested.
We are fortunate to be living in a time where H.H. Dalai Lama is in our world. Jeff has received public Sutra and Tantra teachings, from His Holiness on many occasions in both India and the U.S..
May His Holiness the Dalai Lama remain in this world until samsara becomes non existent.
Any explanation that is given is only possible because of the kindness of these great teachers.
